Adding Subtitles to your Reel using VLC

You can use a media player like VLC to add auto-generated subtitles to your reel

LMFF London Banner - white S.png

If you want to show your film with subtitles you can use a media player like VLC to make it happen. Other media players are available and the process will be similar but we have chosen to share instructions specifically for VLC. We know this programme is very popular and it works on Macs as well as PCs.

Please note that the results are not perfect - what you will be adding are autogenerated captions, so there will be lots of errors. We think so long as you explain this, people with hearing difficulties will still appreciate the use of these captions.

While the film is running, it is also possible to toggle the captions on and off. For example, some films will already have subtitles embedded in the film and so your subtitles will overlay these and it could look a bit messy. When these films are on, you can quickly disable your auto-captions so that the embedded captions are clearly seen.

The auto-captions will not pick up foreign language but these films will already have captions embedded.

  1. When you follow the link to the video and you have clicked the Download icon, in addition to downloading the film there is also the option to download a transcript. Download both the video file and the transcript file.

  2. Then open VLC on your desktop.. You will see that you can drag the files onto the application. Drag the video file on first. If it starts to play just pause it. Then go to Subtitles in the menu bar at the top of your screen. Click Add Subtitle File and select the Transcript you downloaded.

  3. Now, click again on Subtitles at the top, and select Subtitle Track from the menu. You will see you have a choice of selecting Disable or Track 1. If you select Disable, your sub-titles will not show. If you select Track 1, they will show.

  4. So when you screen your reel, simply open VLC, select the video and click the Play button. Remember, you can quickly disable the captions without even having to pause the film if you don't want to show them on a particular film on the reel - don't forget to restart them by selecting Track 1.
